Usually not. Not scale -- scale is a genuine risk here at around 7.2 grains per gallon, well above EBMUD on the other side of the tunnel, 7.2 to 22 grains per gallon. What we find instead is corrosion: soft low-alkalinity water strips the protective film off a fill valve and inlet screen rather than coating them, and pits the metal over time. Descaling and a filter change resolve more of these calls than a replacement module does, so that is what we check first.
